FASHION- DRESSING AGAINST THE NORM - WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT YOU?
22 February 2018
From eccentric socks to dressing against our gendered expectations, many people push the limits of social norms when it comes to fashion. Research has shown that non-conformists can be viewed as being of a higher status and more competent than those who follow the rules of fashion. We take a look at what different clothing says about the wearer…
Against gendered expectations
The line is becoming increasingly blurred between male and female clothing. Many people are speaking up, opposing the ideas that men and women should be dressed according to their sex. But, are you presenting yourself in a different way when you dress against the gendered expectations?
Although fashionistas are saying that they don’t agree with gender rules, some research suggests that we’re still stuck in our old ways. Psychologists in New Jersey found that attitudes towards gender stereotypes hadn’t changed much between 1983 and 2014.
There is an argument that shows that it’s favourable for women to cross the gender barrier but perhaps not men. Back in 1990, it was found that — despite the sex of the applicant – if the clothing that they wore was more masculine, they were more likely to be hired. When men dressed in pink however (a colour commonly associated with females), they were seen as less intelligent than women who were wearing the same colour.
Eccentric wear
Another way of going against the grain when it comes to style it through eccentric clothing. When we think of outrageous outfits we may think of people with brightly coloured hair, patterned clothing and over the top jewellery. But, there are other ways to express freedom through dress.
For example, people who wear unconventional socks are viewed as being rebellious and expressive. One of these people is Justin Trudeau, the current Prime Minister of Canada, who shows off his fun side by wearing funky socks with a traditional suit. You can make your own subtle ‘eccentric’ changes through patterned socks by CT shirts, online retailers of men’s shirts and accessories. Or make yourself stand out from the crowd through bright scarves and other extras.
By dressing against the norms, studies have shown that you build a brand of being ‘gutsy’. And in fact, people have the potential to see you as more brilliant, creative and successful. One study, published in 2014, found that those who go against conformity can be viewed as of a higher status than those who don’t. They were also considered to be more competent — potentially influencing the impression that they give off in the workplace.
Not only does it affect people’s perceptions of you but it can also affect the way you think, feel and act — this is through ‘embodied cognition’. Since eccentric dress gives you greater potential to express your individuality, it’s possible that it can make you feel more confident and comfortable in different situations. This could then go on to improve your performance at work or in challenges where you want to push yourself.
Against the dress code
In some situations, for a job interview perhaps, it can be argued that dressing in accordance with expectations is the best thing to do.
Under some circumstances, we think that people with extraordinary appearances are more successful.
Men who wear smart, fitted suits as they are often expected to wear in a formal situation, were perceived as being more confident, successful and thought to be earning a higher wage. This was compared to men who weren’t dressed as smartly — in a loosely fitted suit.
In one study that looked at the effects of clothing, it was found that senior managers were rated less favourably if they were dressed more ‘provocative’. This was a skirt slightly above the knee and one button on the blouse undone. It’s clear to see that it is important to consider our dress style carefully as people can make many assumptions without any evidence.
In some environments, wearing your set uniform can improve your productivity. Research found that in a lab, those who were wearing lab coats felt smarter and went on to perform better!
As we can see, dressing against societies expectations can have many effects on the opinion of others and your own performance. Although it’s important to express yourself through dress, you don’t want to hinder your work or your impression on others in formal situations. Wear a pair of crazy socks underneath your day-to-day outfit instead…

LIFESTYLE: WAYS TO STAY POSITIVE THIS YEAR
18 January 2018
First up it's the 18th of January so you should all have a brand new diary and calendar, if not you need to go and get one. I think writing down things really helps me stay productive and I like to tick things off and this keeps me on track. I also keep a note of any appointments etc, coffee with friends so i'm super productive and know what i'm doing from one day to the next. If I have a free day then I can use this for blogging and i'll usually write a list of blog posts I want to write or write a list of products I need to review so i've always got something to write about. I also use the calendar and notes on my phone but I find actually writing things in my diary and on my calendar works better for me. There's lots of lovely planners around like The Happiness Planner and these ones from Dot Creates and so if you work from home or like having a big diary I think they are great and have lots of sections to keep you organised.
Next up why not invest in a new wardrobe, get yourself some nice new clothes that you will be proud to be seen in. If you work in an office get yourself a nice new jacket or suit. This will make you feel really confident, and ready to get that promotion this year. If you are self-employed even though you don't wear a uniform appearing clean and professional is a good way to get new commissions, work etc, even if you just invest in a new dress, pair of jeans or a new coat.
Having a positive mental attitude is going to boost positivity and productivity this year. Why not join the gym or start going for a run, I find exercise a really good way of thinking and i've come up with some really good ideas whilst i've been out for a jog. Exercise can also help you sleep better which is another benefit and another way to boost your positive attitude.
Start doing yoga, have a massage, go for a walk around a park, just take some time out for you. Personal well-being is very important and looking after yourself should be a priority this year.
Healthy eating is another good way of staying positive, I always have a 'lets do this' attitude when i'm eating well. I'm always very motivated to do well. Sugary and fatty foods can make you feel sluggish and can leave you feeling tired and irritated.

LIFESTYLE: A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A PART TIME BLOGGER
17 October 2017
I thought it might be quite fun to talk about what I do on a day to day basis as my life is pretty much about to change in every way possible. If you didn't know ( WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ? ) i'm pregnant and my baby is due pretty much any day now. We are due on the 4th November but I have a feeling she is going to make an early entrance. Once little bubba is here pretty much everything is going to change, I will have a little person that I have to look after every second of every day.
I'm currently on maternity leave so I've had lots of time to work on my blog and catch up with friends, I've even been watching a few seasons of Gossip Girl on Netflix.
I usually start by waking up and checking my phone, i'll scroll through everything Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, check my emails and Snapchat before getting up and ready for the day.
Once i'm up i'll pop the kettle on and make my breakfast, I've been loving Coco Pops throughout pregnancy. I usually have toast or a bagel with a cup of tea. Another look at my phone and whats going on in the world before getting ready.
My dressing table is in my bedroom and usually i'll watch a few Youtube videos or listen to some music on Spotify whilst I get ready. Once my make up is all done and my hair is straight I go and pick out an outfit and get dressed.
Then it's time to think about blogging and how i'm going to spend the day. I write a lot of lists and will usually try and plan out what blog posts i'm going to write. I'll reply to any emails and spend time working on my blog whether that's writing a product review, taking photos for my blog or I could have an outfit to feature so Clint and I might pop out to take some outfit snaps.
Sometimes i'll go and meet a friend for a coffee in town or have a chilled day at home, as I said i've been watching Netflix, right now i'm watching Gossip Girl. I'm nearly finished season 2, it's soo good.
I'll usually keep an eye on my emails throughout the day via my phone but if there's any important ones i'll pop my laptop back on and reply to a few emails. On the evening's I try and keep them free so I can chill out with Clint. We love watching films and will usually watch a film on Netflix.
As you can see I spend alot of time on my laptop and on my phone so it's really important that I have good broadband. We don't have any problems with our internet and as I said above I use it alot! It's great when were watching our programmes and films online, we don't get any buffering. It's really fast when i'm browsing my social media apps and even uploading videos to Youtube doesn't take me very long at all. Check out what packages Talk Talk Business have to offer.
And that's pretty much it, I love having a nice hot bath and unwinding. get my pj's on and ready for bed. I've been reading a few pregnancy books before bed to relax and get myself ready for bed. I've also been thinking about Christmas alot as it's just around the corner. I've been writing lists and browsing on my phone looking for the perfect gifts for our friends and family. I think were going to be doing most of our Christmas shopping online this year as I really don't fancy doing my Christmas shopping and battling the crowds with a new born baby.
How much do you use your internet at home? Do you use the internet to upload videos and watch films at home like us? Or do you just do abit of online shopping and Skype your family and friends? Use the hashtag #BroadbandandMe to share how important decent internet speeds are to you and what you use your internet for when your at home.

LIFESTYLE: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR HOLIDAY PHOTOS?
12 September 2017
We haven't had a holiday this year so i've been looking back through my photos of our previous holidays. I've been to lots of amazing places over the last few years, Florida, Ibiza and the Canaries. Destination2.co.uk are running a campaign all about Catching and Creating Memories While Travelling so I thought i'd share some of my favourite holiday memories and what I do with my holiday photos.
You can check out one of my recent blog posts all about my favourite holiday moments, we recently went to Ibiza and Florida and had the most amazing time.
I love taking photos on holiday, of places and people. I like to look back at photos and remember the amazing times we've had and I always seem to remember the good times better when i'm looking back through photos.
Most of my photos just end up on my laptop in folders and on memory cards, I sometimes upload them to Facebook so that my family and friends can see them( yes i'm one of those annoying friends that uploads their holiday snaps)
I also have a few photo albums and keep some of my favourite snaps in these to look back on. These are handy to show photos to family that don't really like computers or don't have Facebook. I also like to just sit and look through them every now and again, I've always liked having actual photos printed out and it's so easy to do now as there's so many app's you can use to print photos and it's really affordable to get them printed now.
As well as my photo albums I have lots of frames dotted around my apartment these are just a few of my favourite frames but we have them in every room, even the hallway. We have had some really amazing times together over the last 4 years and I love having photos around to remind us of all the special times we've spent together.
We are about to have a baby and i'm so excited to go on our first family holiday, i'm going to take photos of absolutely everything and I will be filling up photo albums with our family snaps to keep them safe forever and ever. What do you do with your holiday photos, do they just end up on your laptop or do you get them printed out? Do you have any amazing holidays coming up? If you need some inspiration then check out lots of amazing destinations here on Destination2.co.uk

LIFESTYLE: TOP TIPS FOR RENTING
11 September 2017
Today's post is all about my top tips for renting. I've been renting for about a year and a half now and have had a few ups and downs along the way. I found blog posts such as this really helpful when we were looking at renting as if was all new to us and we had only ever lived at home with parents. Below are a few of my top tips for renting, if you have any questions and I haven't covered it below then just send me a comment or email and i'm happy to help or check out the HomeLet website for lots of information about renting for tenants and landlords.
ORGANISATION - You need to be organised when renting, from looking at properties to moving in. When looking at properties you need to know how much you are willing to spend and how much you can afford, you need to know what you want, how many bedrooms? a garden? bath or shower?
Write a list of properties you want to enquire about with estate agent information and numbers and make sure you have all your documents ready to go! We found renting was very speedy you need to get your applications in quickly, they usually need to see your financial documents and get you to fill out forms with your passport details so have everything to hand.
When you actually move in it's good to go into the empty house/ flat etc and take photos of everything. That way you have proof of what was in the house when you moved in and what kind of state it was in. This makes it easier when your trying to get your deposit back when moving out. Also write a list of these things too just incase you loose the photos as a backup. We have a folder where we keep all of the bills, documents and I have kept this list safe in here.
PAYING THE BILLS - As well as your rent, you have other bills to pay like council tax, utility bills like water, gas, electric and internet. I set up a joint account with Clint and we use this to pay all of these bills. We each put money in on payday and this covers all of these bills so we don't have to worry. Try and set up your bills so they come out at around the same time, all of our bills come out on the first of the month which makes it easy to remember. Use comparison websites to get the best deals on your utility bills, don't just stick with what the previous tenant had.
INSURANCE - You should get some kind of content insurance should you have any kind of accident, this covers your stuff as most landlords insurance doesn't cover your things. Also appliances should be checked regularly. Our boiler and gas appliances are checked every year to make sure it's safe.
TENANCY AGREEMENT- Make sure you have an up to date tenancy agreement. If you have been living at the same place for a while or you decided to have a short term tenancy agreement then have a look over this and make sure it's up to date. You may have originally agreed on a 6 month tenancy but now a 12 month tenancy would suit you better, get in touch with your landlord or estate agent about updating the agreement if you feel it's now out of date.
Do you have any tips for renting or are you about to rent for the first time? Use the hashtag #RentingRules and share your top tips for renting!

FASHION: BRITISH SUMMER WISHLIST
11 August 2017
Today's post is a British summer wishlist, we've been having some rubbish weather the past few days so I thought i'd pop a few warmer pieces on my wishlist and share them with you. As you may or may not know i'm pregnant so some of these bits are maternity wear however some bits are not and just normal sizing.
I'm loving this blush pink colour right now and I love this pink skater maternity dress from Topshop. It's just a pretty colour and would be very easy to wear, you could even wear it with tights and a cardigan in the Autumn months.
I've included this Tiba and Marl changing bag/ weekend bag as I really like it and have been looking for a nice changing bag, I like that it's black and would go well with everything. It's a really good size so would easily fit all my bits and pieces for baby inside and would be a great hospital bag.
Next is this really cute top from New Look, this isn't a maternity style but it would go over my bump and this top is a steal! It's only £7.99 so if you like it go and order it because it won't be around for long.
I need some new maternity jeans so i've picked out these ones from Topshop as I don't have any blue maternity jeans and I like the ripped knee and distressed look of these and they are in the sale.
How cute are these little sandals from New Look, the look so easy to wear, maybe not weather appropriate for all the rain we've had but so cute for those warmer days.
Another blush pink item I know!! This cardigan from Asos is so cute though, I love the colour and it looks so snug and comfy perfect for those colder days, it would be easy to throw on over some jeans and a cute t-shirt.
Finally, it's coming up to my birthday and I usually ask for a new watch, I haven't been wearing my watches much recently but this Olivia Burton one is so cute, I love the little bee's and the grey strap is very versatile and easy to wear.
So that's my wishlist for this month, I will be putting together another wishlist next month for my birthday month! Let me know what you think of these bits and send over links to your wishlists.

INTERIORS: HOW TO GET YOUR HOME LOOKING SUMMER READY?
15 June 2017
Images taken from Pinterest
With summer fast approaching it's the perfect time to make some changes to your home, freshen it up and get summer ready! Today I thought i'd share a few ways to get your home looking summer ready.
There are lots of affordable ways in which you can get your home looking summer ready.
Using flowers and plants - adding a pop of colour using plants and flowers is a really easy and affordable way to make your home summery. I always have flowers in the flat. We also have a selection of plants, too add lots of colour to the flat.
Accessories - Use accessories like candles, cushions and prints to add colour to a room. This is an easy to way to revamp a room without spending lots of money. I'm loving all the botanical prints that are around right now!
Mirrors - A big mirror will add more space to a room aswell as lots more light! A bigger and brighter space will instantly look lighter and more summery.
Open all the windows and doors - I like to let lots of fresh air in and have a good clean this makes a room feel all new and fresh and perfect for the new season.
Colour - Use colours to create a summery room. We have white walls so I prefer to add colour using accessories and furniture. You could use wallpaper or paint to create a feature wall that screams summer.

LIFESTYLE: CAR MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR SUMMER
15 May 2017
With summer just around the corner you may be thinking of jumping in the car and getting away for the weekend? Or maybe you've booked to stay in a cottage for a week in Wales or going camping with the kids! What ever your plans are if you are going on any long journey you should make sure your car is safe and that you have taken extra precautions before getting on the road.
-Checking your tyres, if your tyres are not safe they can cause some very serious accidents or issues. Blow outs or a puncture on the motorway can be so dangerous so just checking your tyres before you leave is so important.
-Lights? This can be a real hazard whether your driving during the day or night. If your lights are not working you can cause an accident as the driver behind won't know what you are doing. Light bulbs are very inexpensive so replace any broken ones before you go. In the dark a lack of lights can be so so dangerous, especially on little country roads that have no street lights.
-Checking you have enough water in your car. Even if the weather is lovely and you wont be using your windscreen wipers the water in your car the water also keeps the car cool and your engine temperature maintained. Your car could overheat or you could break your engine if you don't have enough water in your car.
-Engine Oil, again this can cause all kinds of problems including your engine could completely seize up and stop working which would leave you pretty much stranded. So make sure this is topped up before you go on your journey. You check the oil using the dipstick.
-Have your car serviced? Have you got an MOT coming up? You can check your MOT expiry date here on the MOT checker. If your due to get your car serviced or MOT get this done before you head away for the weekend. There could be a serious problem with your car that you know nothing about. Having your car checked out before you go away could prevent you braking down so it's worth doing. If you live in Fife you can book your car for an MOT in Kirkcaldy at Fife Autocentre Getting your car checked out before you get on the road could prevent your car braking down or being involved in an accident, if your car did break down you could end up paying out for recovery trucks and spending alot of money getting your car fixed away from home.
- Plan your journey, do you have enough petrol? Do you know where your going? The nearest service station? Do you have tools in the boot should you need them. Have you got water and food should you break down. It doesn't hurt to be prepared.
Once you have had your car MOT and it's all ready for the journey get the car filled up with petrol, food (lots of sweets and chocolate for the journey) and on your way, have a great time!!!
GUEST POST: What’s the Best Way to Wear Lip Liner?
Lip liner is a wonderful thing when it’s done right. Problem is, how do you get it right? If you’re looking to plump up your pout with a bit of makeup magic, take a look at our top tips for lip lining.
Hold Your Pencil at a 45 Degree Angle
Let’s begin with the basics. When applying your lip liner, try holding it at roughly a 45® angle and using short, light strokes. This will help you avoid the issue of having different weighted lines at random points of your lips, creating a more evenly pencilled pout.
Quick Lip Contouring
Have you ever heard of lip liner contouring? Well, while the whole process may seem perplexing to some, it’s actually a lot easier than you thought. All you need is a darker lip liner for the bow and centre of the bottom lip, and blend it together with a lighter shade for optimum pout contour. That wasn’t so hard now was it?
Go Natural with a Nude Pencil
If you’re looking to accentuate your natural pout, then why not line your lips with a nude pencil? A naturally toned lip liner will add that little bit of glam to your day-to-day palette, without going overboard.
Make it Matte
Another way to add a little something extra to a neutral look is to go with a matte lip liner. Not only will it build upon your natural pout, but if you’re wearing a light lip gloss or lipstick, it’ll keep it glued to your lips for longer too.
Lock in the Lipstick First
Finally, the golden rule of excellent lip lining: always apply your lipstick first. It’ll make evenly lining your lips so much easier, and when your lipstick begins to wear off, you won’t be left with an awkward ring around your pout.
Trying out a new makeup trend can be terrifyingly exciting, but hopefully with a few of these tips and tricks, you can get it right first time.
About the Author We here at Perfect Lips are dedicated to creating the perfect pout so that you can wear your smile with confidence. If you’d like to take a look at how we can help you, you can do so here.
