LIFESTYLE: TRAVELLING WITH A BABY: IS THE FAR EAST TOO FAR?

When you welcome your firstborn, you may think that your far flung jaunts abroad are no longer a possibility. Since your little darling arrived, you might think you need to book yourself on a package holiday, venture to a Balearic and succumb to the all-inclusive resort. While there’s nothing wrong with such a holiday, you might yearn for the freedom of organising your own foray overseas with your little brood in tow. But is this even possible?

Holidays by their very nature should be relaxing. Allowing a tour operator to take on the responsibility of booking your flights, organising your accommodation, sourcing excursions and even handling the airport transfers can be tempting. This way, all you need to worry about is making sure you’re packed, ensuring the passports are in date and finding your way to the airport. However, where’s the fun in that? While Lanzarote is a delightful place to while away a fortnight, you want more adventure to your trip. You remember when you were in your early twenties and you thought nothing of packing your forty five litre backpack and taking the first flight you could to embark on a backpacking jaunt around South America. Now you have a little one, do you have to wave goodbye to such a holiday?

You simply need to think a little more outside the box and put your offspring at the centre of every decision you make. The Far East is an excellent option for those families who hanker after a more far-flung and unique destination rather than a mundane Greek island. Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and China are all relatively safe and cater to tourist families. Take a look at how you can travel to the Far East with a baby and still have an incredible travel experience.

Basics

It doesn’t matter where you are heading on holiday, there will inevitably be a major alteration in your little cherub’s routine. This can make for an eventful first couple of days. To try and limit the impact of jet lag, new smells, the flight, and a new bed, try and keep everything else the same. Take his or her favourite snacks on the flight, ensure you have a favourite bit of muslin or toy to help add a touch of familiarity to your trip no matter where you are and remember to keep talking to your little one. If you are forever chuntering away to your offspring about the weather, the view or general chit-chat, keep doing it. Doing everything in your power to maintain a sense of normality will prevent your baby from feeling stressed. Babies pick up on their parent’s vibe, so try and stay relaxed and enjoy the trip you have planned.

Before You Go

Before you even set foot on the plane, you should be planning a few more aspects to your holiday than you might have done in the past. While on your gap year you may have set off without a hostel booked and you winged it once you landed, now is not the time to repeat that experience. Now that you are older, hopefully wiser and perhaps a little more mature, you need to be thinking about the needs of your little one. If you’re venturing to Singapore, consider a hdb room rental for the entirety of your visit. This means you will have a solid base, you can be sure to secure a cot and all of the space you need for your young family, and you will have the flexibility to cook your little one’s meals. If there are any allergies in your brood, this could be vital to ensure their safety when abroad.

You may want to arrange travel within a country before you go. Bullet trains in Japan, and some in China can be booked in advance meaning that you won’t have to endure long queues at the airport. Japan even has rail passes making your travel easier once you have your itinerary planned.

It’s vital to at least have a skeleton itinerary in place before you head off to your chosen Far Eastern destination. If you fancy taking in the vista from the Great Wall of China, make sure you choose the most appropriate part of the wall for your family. Badaling, while touristy, is relatively flat and easy to navigate. Other sections, like Juyong, are ridiculously steep and would be treacherous for little feet. Use your common sense when booking excursions and considering how best to utilise your time.

Climate

With a little one in tow, make sure you aren’t venturing halfway across the globe during monsoon season or when the heat is sweltering and unbearable. While you might be able to cope, the chances are that your little darling could be at risk from heatstroke. Even with suncream and a hat, Far Eastern temperatures can hit forty degrees which would mean staying indoors. This hardly makes for a great vacation experience.

Family Friendly Fun

If you fancy a jaunt to Japan, you will have a wealth of family-friendly activities on your doorstep. The wonderfully exclusive Studio Ghibli Museum only allows a set number of visitors in each day and is protective over its exhibits. If your family adores My Neighbour Totoro or can’t get enough of Ponyo, this excursion could be a memorable addition to your Japanese Odyssey. Alongside the Studio Ghibli Museum, you could also visit Disneyland in Tokyo. Similar to Florida and Paris, this super camp and glittery theme park of fun is the stuff of dreams for little ones. You could be shaking hands with Mickey, meeting up with Pluto and making friends with the seven dwarfs.

In Singapore, you might want to embark on a world first as a family. Opened in 1994, the world’s first nocturnal zoo means you can take part in a nighttime safari to explore the wonderful creatures within Singapore’s greatest animal attraction. Hugely popular, you can observe tigers and lions in vast natural reserves, created with animal welfare in mind.

You might prefer to head to Jurong where you could take your little brood to the Science Centre. Who’d have thought you could squeeze in an educational visit while on holiday. The interactive exhibits are engaging, and you might even have the chance to head to the in-house observatory to gaze at the stars through their enormous Kepler refractor telescope.

In Phuket in Thailand, you might want to take a trip to the magical and recently renovated world class aquarium to explore the underwater creatures that roam the surrounding oceans. The exhibits are well maintained, the creatures are looked after, and you might even be able to sneak in to watch a feeding time. There is a huge and fully immersive tunnel to walk through, and all of the signage and displays are written in English as well as Thai meaning that you can get the most out of your aquatic experience.

If you are considering a more self-planned holiday abroad with your family, consider venturing to the Far East. The people are welcoming, you can enjoy immersing yourself into a new culture once again, and you can relish the opportunity to enjoy the style of travelling you couldn’t get enough of when you were young, free and single. Just because you have a little one doesn’t mean you can’t see the world. On the contrary, with a little thought, some extra planning, and a clear itinerary, you could enjoy the most unique and wonderful family Far Eastern adventure.

FASHION: HOLIDAY STYLES

Holiday season is officially here, and boy are we excited to get some sun, sea, and even the sand! There’s no better time in your life than going on holiday, because you’re just able to have so many different experiences than you would at home. But, if there’s one thing that us girls seem to love the most, it’s shopping for holiday clothes. So much planning goes into this process, and even though we love it, we have to admit that it’s definitely one of the most annoying parts. You have to try and imagine what you want to look like every night, what you’re going to be up to, and you’ll always end up buying a few extra unnecessary outfits. Whether you over pack or not, we think we’ve got some excellent holiday styles that you should be adding to your list. Have a read on to find out more.

Beachwear

Considering you’re going to spend most of your time at the beach or by the pool, beachwear is the first thing that you should be thinking about. It all depends on what you feel comfortable in, but we think we’ve got a few styles that you’ll like. Coming back in with force is the bathing suit at the minute, and there’s plenty out there taking the shine. We think simple colours such as white, black, or even pinks are greens are the best to go for. You can now get high rise ones as well, meaning they’re slightly more flattering from behind. A high rise swim suit with a plunge front would be perfect for a day at the pool or the water park. Or, you could go for a funky patterned bikini, again with high rising waistline. Then, you need to think about cover ups and kaftans, and there are plenty of them. We’re really loving the lacey look for these, going for either a black or white colour on them.

Night Time

The night time is the most exciting part for a lot of you. It gives you a chance to dress up, drink too many cocktails, and eat a lot of fine foods. We recommend going for the float look, or maxi dresses. A float dress or skirt will keep you nice and cool, but still looks really pretty. In case it gets cold, it might be worth having a look at denim jackets, or light cardigans if you know it isn’t going to go that cold. You should always have a little clutch bag with you to carry your essentials, and we think that sticking to wedges or sandals is best for the night time. You don’t want to be hurting your feet with all of the walking around you’ll be doing.

Accessory Essentials

Accessories are essential on holiday, and we think you’ve got a few that you definitely need to pack. First on your list should be sun glasses, and we don’t think you should just go for the one pair. Take a couple, because one is bound to scratch or break, and then you’ve got a few choices to keep it varied. Then you need to think about necklaces and earrings to spice up your outfits a little. Go for colours if you’re wearing black, and throw in some silver and gold for those elegant nights.

AMELIAS FIRST HOLIDAY

We've just got back from our first family holiday with Amelia. We spent a few days in Great Yarmouth at the Haven Caravan site in Hopton on Sea.

We went with my mom and dad and my sister, her boyfriend and their baby!

We had a lovely few days we went to the beach, took the kiddies swimming, played a few games of bowling, watched the football, went to the Pleasure Beach and went on loads of rides.

It was hard work having the two babies with us and it was very different to holidays i've taken before having a baby!

We didn't have the best weather either which made it difficult as we had packed quite summery outfits for the babies but it was very nippy.

We had a lovely first holiday and I thought i'd share a few holiday snaps

LIFESTYLE: TRAVEL WITH A ROMANTIC PARTNER - YOUR LOVING GUIDE

Travelling with a romantic partner abroad can be a very personal and intimate experience, one that can sweep you off your feet if you’re not careful (perhaps you might consider this a good thing!) However, traveling with a romantic partner can often be somewhat of a different experience than traveling with friends and family members - and not just in the obvious ways. There are some wonderful opportunities for the both of you here, and also some good advice you should follow in order to stay safe despite keeping a stomach filled with butterflies.

Consider the following:

Speak Your Truth

When headed abroad with someone you love, especially if there relationship is in its infancy, you can sometimes be so interested in giving everything to the other person that you forget to speak your truth. It might be you’re happy to accommodate your boyfriend throughout all of the activities they want to visit, at a cost of visiting the places you would like to see. This isn’t fair. Remember that you are also paying for this vacation, or at least surrendering your time to it. You should be able to suggest locations that you visit, and if the relationship is strong this will be no problem.

This isn’t to say you should fight about going places, but that both opinions should be considered. It might be that your partner is very interested in experiencing a sporting activity that scares you, such as deep scuba diving. There is always a benefit in challenging yourself and heading outside of your comfort zone, but sometimes you can feel forced into doing things you might not have enjoyed doing because of this feeling of obligation.

Travelling abroad with someone this close can make you behave in ways you might not have originally. Never be afraid to speak your truth and always consider your safety first. If they are worth their salt, they will be more than happy for this to be the case.

Look Out For One Another

Romantic vacations can be quite dizzying. They might make you do silly things, such as climb up a cliff face for the adventure of it, or head to dangerous ground in order to see the most beautiful views. It might just be that in your fascination with the other person you forget to properly understand your location and where you are, or to keep an incredibly close eye over your currency and documentation. Be sure to come to an arrangement to help the other person manage their belongings and to stay safe at all times. No matter how much you might want to impress the other person, allowing young love to be reckless, overly energetic and dangerous can cause you both to experience an unnecessarily negative circumstance.

Practice, Care & Prolonged Experiences

Heading on one vacation can be a beautiful experience between you and a partner, but sometimes a more prolonged experience could be called for. It might be that contributing to an apartment in a beautiful country such as Indonesia https://www.rumah.com/rumah-dijual/di-area-palembang-idss14/dibawah-400juta-rupiah could help you come together and practice living together before you make your proposal. It might be that this truly helps you understand the other person past a week of nice experiences, and instead helps you bond a form of continual alliance with one another, absorbing a culture together and thus creating an experience that no one can take from you both.

Surprises

Surprises are the core of a positive vacation experience. It might be your surprise your boyfriend with tickets to a show nearby, or he books a table at one of the most prized restaurants in the area. Surprises are fun, and despite the safety requirements we have previously espoused, can come from all angles. It might be you search for a souvenir that only the two of you can remember, or in extreme circumstances that you get matching tiny tattoos on your ankle. Be wise about your surprises, but understand they can make the core of the experience shine, and help you both feel wonderful in one another’s company.

Contact

Despite travelling with one person and wanting them to be your world for a matter of weeks or even months, it will not do to drop off the face of the Earth, no matter how romantic that might seem. Always keep in contact with your family at home with regular updates, and with your friends too. Always keep a contact line open, even if you have to put forth further effort to use it in the case of small villages with limited communication networks.

Always understand the location of your nearest embassy and how to get there, as well as keeping more than one phone on you at all times in case you lose one or have it taken from you. Also, remind your partner and have them remind you of the necessity to stay on the grid, and to be reached when necessary.

Peace & Reflection

Romantic vacations can be quite an intense time. While you and your partner are likely head over heels for one another, that does not guarantee that you will not argue or come to some form of conflict. Travel can be hard on people, despite the wonder and beauty it promises. A good way of getting around this is to look for peace and reflection where you can. You needn’t spend every waking moment with the other person. It might be finding escapism on a beach with an incredible book about local history or just a good novel, or it might be attending a local pottery crafting class on your own while your partner explores.

These efforts conducted now and then can help your vacation stay fresh, and for you to unwind from one another now and again. Even great and well intentioned people can clash if tired or drained, so allowing for a little ‘me-time,’ now and then can help the vacation stay a positive experience for all.

With these efforts, travel with a romantic partner is sure to be the most romantic, safe and wise trip you have been on thus far.

LIFESTYLE: PICKING THE PERFECT WINTER HOLIDAY DESTINATION

We love going on holiday, we actually haven't had a holiday this year because we've been trying to save money as we have a baby on the way. I think we will book a couple of holidays for next year hopefully one before the summer holidays and maybe a winter sun holiday. It will be so exciting to go away on our first holiday with our baby.

We usually book a week away for around this time of year to get away and find some sun.  I love heading off to the Canaries as the weather is great all year round! We have been to nearly all of the Canary Islands, they are one of my favourite places to go and we will be heading there next year as I think it's the perfect destination to take the baby as it has good weather is isn't too far away, it's about 4ish hours on the plane.

One of my favourite places in the Canary Islands is Gran Canaria, it's such a beautiful island with lots of gorgeous flowers around, pretty white buildings and sandy beaches. I really like Puerto Mogan which is one of the little market towns on the island. We've been there a few times to visit the market and to see all the amazing boats in the harbor.

Spending time at the beach or by the pool just relaxing and reading a few books is how I like to spend my holiday. There's some really lovely beaches in Gran Canaria, my favourite is Amadores Beach. We usually stay in the Amadores area so we are close to the beach, the location is really good as you are right around the corner from Puero Rico which is where the nightlife, restaurants and shops are.

Are you planning on getting away this Winter and need some help picking a destination? Check out the Destinations page on Holiday Gems to get lots of ideas on places to go this season.

LIFESTYLE: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR HOLIDAY PHOTOS?

We haven't had a holiday this year so i've been looking back through my photos of our previous holidays. I've been to lots of amazing places over the last few years, Florida, Ibiza and the Canaries. Destination2.co.uk are running a campaign all about Catching and Creating Memories While Travelling so I thought i'd share some of my favourite holiday memories and what I do with my holiday photos.

You can check out one of my recent blog posts all about my favourite holiday moments, we recently went to Ibiza and Florida and had the most amazing time.

I love taking photos on holiday, of places and people. I like to look back at photos and remember the amazing times we've had and I always seem to remember the good times better when i'm looking back through photos.

Most of my photos just end up on my laptop in folders and on memory cards, I sometimes upload them to Facebook so that my family and friends can see them( yes i'm one of those annoying friends that uploads their holiday snaps)

I also have a few photo albums and keep some of my favourite snaps in these to look back on. These are handy to show photos to family that don't really like computers or don't have Facebook.  I also like to just sit and look through them every now and again, I've always liked having actual photos printed out and it's so easy to do now as there's so many app's you can use to print photos and it's really affordable to get them printed now.

As well as my photo albums I have lots of frames dotted around my apartment these are just a few of my favourite frames but we have them in every room, even the hallway. We have had some really amazing times together over the last 4 years and I love having photos around to remind us of all the special times we've spent together.

We are about to have a baby and i'm so excited to go on our first family holiday, i'm going to take photos of absolutely everything and I will be filling up photo albums with our family snaps to keep them safe forever and ever. What do you do with your holiday photos, do they just end up on your laptop or do you get them printed out? Do you have any amazing holidays coming up? If you need some inspiration then check out lots of amazing destinations here on Destination2.co.uk

*Collaboration with Destination2.co.uk, they did not pay for this post however they did gift me a voucher to buy some new albums/ frames for my photos

FASHION: VIONIC NALA SANDAL REVIEW

I was so excited when I received an email asking if i'd like to try a pair of Vionic Sandals*. I'm pregnant and my feet are very swollen and I was finding most of my shoes were feeling uncomfortable! This email came at the most perfect time, i've been wearing them for a few weeks now so thought i'd share how i've been getting on.

I picked the Vionic Nala Sandals as I wanted something I could wear to work, I work in retail and with it being summer i'm wearing alot of maxi dresses so I thought a pair of sandals would be perfect. The Nala style is a classic design, I went for the white ones which are really versatile, they also come in Red and Black.

Vionic also stock heels and wedges, sneakers, loafers and flats, slippers and much more so theres something for everyone.

The Nala Sandals feature a Midsole which absorbs shock and reduces the stress on feet, ankles and knees. An Outsole, which is  a durable rubber outsole with a patterned tread to provide traction and the Footbed FMT Technology to designed to hug your arches and support your feet.

Honestly at first I didn't think they were working for me, they were quite uncomfortable and were really hurting my arches. I thought i'd continue to wear them and see if once i'd broken them in a bit if they were more comfortable. I'm glad I was persistent and gave them a chance. I'm used to wearing very flat shoes which I why I think they were hurting my feet. After a few days wearing them at work I noticed they were no longer uncomfortable. They are really comfortable and I can wear them all day at work with no problems. I've had lots of compliments on them and a few people have actually mentioned how comfortable they look. A few of the girls at work had actually heard of Vionic and were happy to hear that I think they are very comfortable.

I think £70 is a bit steep for a pair of sandals and I probably wouldn't spend that much but I'd be happy to pick up a pair in the sale. The Nala style is actually on offer right now so you can grab a pair for £50 which is more reasonable. I know a lot of people that would be happy to spend £70 of pair of shoes if they were comfortable.

I went for my usual size, as I said my feet are abit swollen right now due to pregnancy but i've found that my normal size fits perfectly and my feet don't look like they are bulging out which is lovely.

LIFESTYLE: BEST HOLIDAY MOMENTS

We have been so lucky to have been on some really incredible holidays over the last 4 years. Today i'm sharing two of those holidays with you! These have been my favourite holiday memories! I have been very lucky and have been on a lot of holidays. My parents took us on holiday every year since I was young and since then i've pretty much gone away every year since. I've been all over really, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Cyprus, Florida and more.

One of my favourite holiday memories was going to Ibiza, we went during September 2015 and it was one of the best holidays ever!! I had done research before we headed out on different bars and different trips we wanted to do but we were pretty open minded. We arrived mid-morning, early afternoon to our hotel and got settled and then we had a welcome meeting. We were staying in San Antonio so expected the hotel to get pretty loud and we wasn't sure if we would be doing many club nights and things like that. The welcome meeting was great! We booked loads of trips including a paint party, boat trip and club night at Amnesia. We had the best time! The paint party was soo good! I've never done anything like that before, everyone was so nice and it was so chilled. We got to listen to good music, outside in the warm and chuck powder paint everywhere!! We met some cool people, had some drinks and a really good time! The next day we chilled out and had a boat party in the evening, this again was so good! Everyone had a really good time and was just enjoying themselves. It was just the most amazing experience. The views and sunset was beautiful and we got to enjoy ourselves have a dance and meet some really lovely people. I loved Ibiza, the days are chilled and it's just such a beautiful place to be, the sunsets are amazing and the foods great! It's not all about raves and drinking but don't be put off we had such an amazing time!!

One of my other favourite holiday moments has to be America!! We went to Orlando, Florida and it was incredible! I never went as a kid and as I got older and older I really wanted to go. We went for two weeks and got wristbands for Universal. We didn't do Disney as we felt this would have been too much for just two weeks and it would have been. We will do Disney in the future with our kids when they are older. It was two weeks jam packed with rides, food, waterparks and shopping! It was amazing! I need to go back soon!! We had the best time, it was crazy! It's not a holiday, you literally don't stop theres so much to do! We did all the rides and parks and had such a good time! I loved going shopping at the Florida Mall, the Sephora is massive!! I went abit crazy and brought back so much make up and Clint got loads of American sports clothing! We had such an amazing couple of weeks and we will do it all again!

We always take sooo many photos when we go on holiday, on my phone and camera to remember the amazing times we have and it will be amazing to show our kids in the future. I always keep my holiday snaps backed up onto an external hard drive so I don't loose them as well as getting my faves printed out for our albums. It's so easy to get them printed out from websites like Truprint, you can upload your snaps from your computer or Facebook and Instagram making it super easy to get your photos printed out, they even have Photobooks which you can personalise, why not create a Photobook for each holiday!!

What are your best holiday moments? Let me know using the #HolidayMoments hashtag!
Do you get your holiday snaps printed?
